Studio Workshop: Exploring Vernacular Art Environments
Part of the Teacher Education Series seriesOverview:Participating classroom/art teachers will be introduced to vernacular artists and art environments. Teachers will participate in a two-day training session where they will be given access to numerous resources and materials that will facilitate learning about folk and outsider art. Through lectures, production of art, and visits to vernacular art sites, teachers will gain the necessary background, tools, and materials to integrate knowledge of vernacular artists and art into their curriculum.
The two-day field study will begin at Nick Engelbert’s home, Grandview, Hollandale, WI to explore the sculptures and paintings Englebert created in the 1930s. From there a college van or bus will provide free transportation to the Dickeyville Grotto, Dickeyville. Participants will then travel to La Crosse and stay overnight. On the following day participants will view Prairie Moon, Cochrane; the Wegner Grotto, Sparta; the Painted Forest, Valton; and Dr. Evermor’s Sculpture Park, Baraboo.
