Principles of Insurance

Overview:

Many insurance organization employees have never had a formal course about their organization's products and processes. Here is your chance to learn about the insurance process from knowledgeable instructors from Edgewood College, along with informed guest instructors, including Kimberly Shaul, Deputy Commissioner of Insurance for the state of Wisconsin. You'll gain valuable background knowledge that you can use immediately in your occupation and you'll become a more informed consumer of insurance products.

The course meets every Wednesday evening from August 27 through December 17 from 6:00-9:00PM. Students who complete the entire course will receive 3.5 CEU credits.

Who Should Attend:

This course is designed for anyone interested in a career in insurance and related fields. Personnel from insurance organizations should find the course particularly useful and practical in their everyday jobs.  It also has value from a  personal and financial planning standpoint in helping you evaluate your own personal risks and how to minimize them.

Key Topics:

  1. Personal and business risks that are insurable lay the basis for principles of insurance
  2. The regulatory process overseeing the industry
  3. The fundamental insurance process, including insurance contracts and entities assuming risk
  4. Specific types of insurance, including property and liability (automobile, homeowners, renters, business and workers' compensation), life insurance, annuities, estate planning, health insurance and government insurance.
  5. The underwriting, claim adjusting and investment functions
  6. The financial reporting process and critical industry guidlines
