Bill Schrum

Bill Schrum is an “elder” in the family of human resource professionals. He has been practicing his art since 1975, and has promised find something else to do if it ever stops being fun. He has been with the UW Health Physicians since 2001, but during his career he has been the architect and developer of cutting edge human resource functions with small businesses, large businesses, non-profit businesses and the world’s largest for-profit international health system. He has been published in numerous journals and has spoken internationally on healthcare and human resources issues and trends.

Bill began his healthcare career at St. Anthony Hospital System in Denver, and as part of his initial management training spent time working in every department of the hospital. He has cleaned with housekeepers and worked with maintenance people, scrubbed and assisted in surgery, done 24-hour shifts in a trauma center, shadowed physicians, residents and nurses in all areas, and plugged people into respirators. He has assisted in births, and has seen death in NICUs, ICUs, ERs, nursing homes and more places than he cares to remember. He considers this experience his biggest accomplishment as far as gaining practical experience and cultural understanding as to systems of work and their uniqueness and similarities.

During his work with Hospital Corporation of America’s (HCA) International Division, he and his family lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia for five years. During that time, Bill learned real “diversity”, cultural awareness and systems thinking as he connected the “human” resources of HCA functions in London, Rome, Cairo, Riyadh, Singapore, Sydney, Panama, and Brazil… and Nashville.

Bill did his undergraduate work in Economics at the University of Colorado; and did graduate work at the University of Denver. His real “masters” work, however, was the start up of the Lafayette (Colorado) Times newspaper, which was the only weekly paper in Colorado at the time to ever make a profit in its first two years.

He has been a Senior Professional in Human Resources since 1981. He is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management, the American Society of Healthcare Human Resource Administration, the American College of Medical Practice Executives, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Medical Group Management Association. In addition to serving on numerous boards and community organizations, he is a life member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and Disabled American Veterans. He is a past-President of La Crosse SHRM and was Leadership Director for the Wisconsin State SHRM for two years.
